Diagnose the room before you decorate it.
A room rarely fails because it lacks another object. More often, its real job is unresolved, its routes are competing, its light is uneven, its storage is misplaced, or its furniture has staged a quiet coup.
THE DIAGNOSIS MAP
Use the room’s behavior as evidence.
Room Diagnosis is for the moment when a space feels wrong but the proposed cure is still suspiciously close to buying things. The purpose is not to produce a grand theory. It is to identify the most likely conflict well enough to test a better move.
01 / ASSIGNMENT
What must this room accomplish?
Describe an ordinary week, who uses the room, which activities happen together, and which use wins when two needs collide.
02 / FRICTION
What do people repeatedly work around?
Blocked paths, awkward reaching, glare, dead corners, furniture shuffling, slow resets, and recurring clutter are not background noise. They are testimony.
03 / CONDITIONS
What is fixed, movable, or still unknown?
Separate architecture, utilities, dimensions, and immovable constraints from furniture, lighting, storage, habits, and assumptions that can still be tested.

THE WORKING HYPOTHESIS
State one explanation that could be wrong.
A useful diagnosis is provisional and specific: “The room feels crowded because the main route passes through the seating center,” or “The desk is unused because task light arrives from behind the user.” It should explain observed behavior and point toward a test.
A weak diagnosis merely renames the complaint: “The room needs more style,” “The layout is bad,” or “It feels off.” That language may be emotionally accurate, but it cannot guide a decision.
THE REVERSIBLE TEST
Change one variable. Leave the room enough time to answer.
Move
Rotate a chair, clear a route, shift a lamp, borrow a table, tape a footprint, or remove one competing object.
Watch
Observe a normal use cycle without correcting people, staging behavior, or explaining what you hoped would happen.
Judge
Record what improved, worsened, or stayed unchanged. A failed test is still useful when it eliminates the wrong explanation.
The useful output is a bounded next move.
Finish with the room’s job, observed friction, relevant measurements, fixed and movable conditions, unknowns, one working hypothesis, and one reversible experiment.
Stop when the decision depends on structure, electrical work, plumbing, moisture, fire safety, hazardous materials, accessibility compliance, or code. Record the unresolved question and hand it to the relevant qualified professional.
