The problem

The sale ends Sunday, the door measured 33 inches once and 35 the next, and nobody has said yet what the room is actually for.

Most room purchases are made on a photograph, a sale and a measurement nobody wrote down. The free tools and Room Lab help you read a room in the browser. This kit is the file you keep: the evidence, the options, the test and the decision, in one place you can print, save and come back to.

What changes after you use it

You write down the room's job and what cannot change, and score six conditions: movement, light, comfort, function, reset and personality. The lowest names the friction to work on first. Up to five must-haves, in your own words, then check every option and every product.

Every fact goes on the Evidence sheet with its unit and how you know it: measured, observed, told, or only a guess. Two readings that disagree stay flagged until you settle them. A blank is never treated as zero, and centimeters and millimeters are converted, so a metric spec sheet can be compared with your tape.

Before buying anything, you test one change you can undo, for a few ordinary days, against a target you set first. The kit suggests keep, refine, reverse or inconclusive by rules written on the page. If the answer really is to buy, the Buy Spec checks up to six products: whether each fits the space, whether it gets through the tightest opening, its all-in cost with tax and delivery, its return window and its delivery date.

The Decision page prints on one sheet: what you decided, why, what you tried, what you are not buying, and a Before-you-act checklist that says whether anything still stands in the way.

Who it is for

Anyone about to change or buy something for one room who wants the decision written down: a rented apartment, a first home, a room with two jobs, a sofa that may not make the stairs.

Who does not need it

You do not need it if the free Room Lab or a Room Edit already answers your room, or if you want someone to design the room for you: the kit records and checks your decision; it does not design. Designers running client projects want the Design Studio line.

Exactly what you receive

  • The Room Decision Kit · Workbook (Excel), blank12 sheets
  • The Room Decision Kit · Worked example: the desk (Excel)12 sheets
  • The Room Decision Kit · Worked example: the sofa (Excel)12 sheets

Two worked examples show both endings. The desk: a living room that is also an office, where five days with a tray on an empty shelf settle it and nothing is bought. The sofa: two door readings that disagree, a remeasure, and four sofas checked until one passes every check. Everyone and everything in them is made up. The blank is the same workbook, empty and ready for your room.

Inside: Start; Decision; Room; Evidence (40 facts); Options (8); Test and a 21-day Test Log; Buy Spec and Candidates (6 products); History; Method, which shows how every status is worked out; Lists.

What it cannot do

It has never seen your room. It does not certify a fit, a structure, a wall or a product, and it says so on the page. 'Gets in?' tries the carton flat through the tightest opening you measured. It cannot see a stair turn, a tilt or a banister; when it is close, ask the retailer to confirm the whole route.

Works in

Microsoft Excel 2019 or later, and Microsoft 365, on Windows or Mac. Tested in Excel for Windows. No macros, no add-ins, nothing online. Google Sheets and Numbers are not claimed until they have been tested.

See it first

Every picture on this page is a real page printed from the worked examples, not a mock-up.

Read the room

Use the article as evidence, then go and check.

Turn what you have just read into a reading of your own room, scored by the same engine the full diagnosis uses. It stops where diagnosis stops.
