Most figures here are Room for Drama working conventions, not code, law, or universal standards. Where a figure has a published planning basis, that basis is named on the row. The point is to know what kind of evidence you are using before a number becomes a decision.

Sizing things
Almost every timid room is under-scaled. These are the ratios that stop a room reading as a collection of things that arrived separately.
A deliberate border rather than an accidental one.

Where the fixture goes matters more than which fixture it is, and it costs nothing to get right at the planning stage.
Light on the food and on faces, without the fixture sitting in the sight line across the table.

How many people a table actually seats, as distinct from how many chairs fit around it.
Elbows, a plate, a glass, and not touching the person beside you.
Check it without a tapeLay it as if for a real dinner rather than a photograph. Serving dishes count.

Windows and walls
Three numbers that do more for a room than almost anything else available at the same price.
Curtain pole heightNear the ceiling, not the window frame
Height. This is the cheapest architectural change available to almost anybody.
Check it without a tapeHold the pole at both heights and look from the doorway. The difference is not subtle.
What goes wrong under itHung at the frame, curtains announce how small the window is. Hung high, they imply a taller one behind them.

Fullness. A curtain is judged by its folds, not by its fabric.
Check it without a tapeDraw them closed. If there are barely any folds, there is not enough fabric.
What goes wrong under itAt 1.5× or less they hang flat and read as a cheap version of themselves, regardless of what the cloth cost.

Knowing what is actually possible in the room.
Check it without a tapeMeasure every wall run over 4 ft. If the total is under a third of the perimeter, this is a float-the-furniture room.
What goes wrong under itFloor area is what you were sold. Uninterrupted wall is what decides whether a sofa, a bed or a bookcase can exist here at all.

Not the floor area — the wall. Floor area is what the listing sold you. Wall is what decides whether a sofa, a bed or a bookcase can exist in the room at all, and almost nobody measures it before they start shopping.
