The problem

A covered porch gets used on perhaps a handful of perfect days. The rest of the time the cushions are damp or indoors in a heap, the light chair is on its side, the table holds a puddle, the blanket smells, muddy boots and a dripping umbrella land in the door swing, and nothing has a dry home, so using the porch means an expedition to fetch things and a rescue when the weather turns. The usual answers are more accessories — outdoor pillows, a rug, string lights, a patio heater — or enclosing the porch, which either adds more things to rescue or turns a furnishing problem into a building project.

What changes after you use it

Arrange the porch for its worst ordinary day. Watch one bad day and tape the wet line. Keep the door swings, steps, route and any way out clear first. Then, in this order: a wet zone outside the door; a lidded, ventilated store on the dry side that holds every textile; furniture that drains or tips; a seat in the lee on the dry side against solid wall; one outdoor-rated light with no cord through the door; a written, timed bad-weather reset. Accessories last, and only if they fit in the store or can stay out. No enclosure, no heat, no flame. It moves the decision from 'what makes the porch look inviting' to 'what does rain do here, and how quickly can the porch be made ready or made safe', which removes the fetching and the rescuing that stop a porch being used on anything but perfect days.

Who it is for

covered front or back porches with at least part of the floor staying dry on ordinary rainy days; porches with a solid wall, bay or end that gives a lee corner; households who would use the porch more if it were ready; homes with muddy arrivals: yard work, dogs, children, walking.

Who does not need it

Anyone the free Study already solved; uncovered decks, patios and slabs (see The Outside Booth); balconies with load or fixing limits (see Pocket Plot); porches that are the only means of escape or a required route; porches with rot, loose or springy boards, moving railings or unsound steps; porches where rain reaches the whole floor on an ordinary day.

What it cannot do

It gives no universal clearance numbers and makes no structural, electrical, fire, egress, accessibility or code determination; those belong to site-specific authority. Every photograph is a concept visual of an authored room, not a measured site.

Print and offline

Home-print Letter PDFs with embedded fonts; readable offline once downloaded. Working pages have real writing space and survive grayscale printing.
