The Bathroom Has Nowhere to Put Anything, and That Was a Decision
Bathrooms are the only rooms routinely built with no storage at all. The fix is not a bigger vanity — it is finding the shallow depths, the dead wall between the studs, and the eighteen inches above the cistern nobody has claimed.

Every other room in the house is built with somewhere to put things. Kitchens get a whole wall of it. Bedrooms get wardrobes. The bathroom — which holds more small objects per square foot than any room in the house — gets a pedestal basin with a curved leg and a shelf you could balance one bar of soap on.
This is not an oversight you inherited. It is a decision, made repeatedly, because storage costs money and the bathroom is the room where a developer can most easily leave it out and still sell the flat. The consequence is that everything ends up on the two available horizontal surfaces — the cistern lid and the rim of the bath — and the room looks cluttered while genuinely containing almost nothing.
Count what has to live in there
Before deciding where storage goes, find out how much you need, because the answer is smaller than the current mess suggests and larger than any single cabinet will hold.
Take everything out of the bathroom and put it on a bed in three piles. Daily: toothbrush, paste, the one face thing, deodorant. That is usually five to eight items and they need to be reachable without opening anything. Weekly or occasional: the second shampoo, the razor blades, the nail scissors. Those want a door in front of them. Backstock: the four-pack of loo roll, the spare bottles, the towels you are not using this week. Backstock does not belong in the bathroom at all and it is the single largest thing in the pile.
Almost every crowded bathroom is a bathroom storing its backstock at eye level. Move that to a hall cupboard, under a bed, anywhere else, and about half the problem leaves the room with it. It costs nothing, and until you have done it you cannot tell what storage you actually need.
The useful depths are shallower than you think
The instinct is to want deep storage, and deep storage is where bathroom things go to die. A bottle is around 3 inches across. A stack of folded hand towels is about 6. A rolled bath towel is 8 to 10. Almost nothing in a bathroom is more than 6 inches deep, which means a 4-to-6 inch shelf holds nearly everything at a single row — one row, all of it visible, nothing hiding behind anything.
Put those same bottles on a 12-inch shelf and you have built two rows, the back one becomes archaeology, and you buy a second bottle of something you already own. Depth is how a bathroom generates duplicates.
So the good bathroom storage is narrow and vertical: a tall shallow cabinet, a run of 5-inch ledges, a niche. The exception is towels and the under-sink cupboard, which genuinely want depth — and under a sink, put anything deep on a pull-out or in a lifted-out basket, because the trap is in the way and nobody is reaching around a waste pipe on their knees twice a day.
The wall is 3.5 inches deep and nobody is using it
A standard stud wall has a cavity of roughly 3.5 inches between its faces, and 3.5 inches is — see above — exactly one row of bottles. This is why a recessed medicine cabinet is such a good object: it gives you a foot of storage depth without projecting into a room that has no room to give.
The same logic makes a recessed niche in a shower better than any corner caddy ever invented, and turns the space between two studs beside the toilet into shallow shelving. What you must not do is cut into a wall without knowing what is in it — many bathroom walls carry the very pipes and cables that make the bathroom work, and some are structural.
Site boundary: Opening a wall can meet plumbing, electrical, structural, ventilation or fire-separation elements, and wet-area walls in particular may be built to specific requirements. Establish what is inside the wall, and whether it is load-bearing, before cutting. Recessing into a party wall or an external wall is a different job again.
Above the cistern is the most-wasted wall in the house
A toilet cistern lid sits at about 30 inches. The ceiling is at 96. Between those two numbers is five feet of vertical wall directly above a fixture nobody stands close to, and in most bathrooms it holds a small framed print.
Leave about 8 to 10 inches of clearance above the cistern so the lid can come off when the fill valve eventually fails — it will — and everything above that is free. Shelves, a shallow cabinet, an over-the-toilet unit that stands on the floor and needs no fixings at all. It is the only expansion room a small bathroom reliably has.
A drawer beats a cupboard, every time
If you are choosing a vanity, choose drawers. A cupboard under a basin is a cave with a pipe in the middle of it, and its contents are sorted by whoever reached in last. A drawer brings its whole contents up into the light at once, which is the difference between storage you use and storage you fill.
U-shaped drawers that go around the trap exist and are worth asking for. Failing that, two shallow drawers beat one deep one — depth in a drawer creates the same buried-back-row problem as depth on a shelf, just rotated ninety degrees.
The order to do this in
It is cheap to expensive, and it stops working if you skip a step, because everything after the first one is sized by what the first one leaves behind.
Remove the backstock from the room. Sort what remains into daily, occasional and neither, and throw the third pile away. Give the daily five a home that needs no door — a ledge, a tray, a hook — because anything behind a door at seven in the morning ends up back on the cistern by Thursday. Then claim the wall above the cistern, since it is free and needs no permission. Then, and only then, price a recessed cabinet or a vanity with drawers, knowing precisely how many inches of shelf you are short.
