Hard floor, plaster, glass, a low sofa: the room is a drum, and every conversation held in it costs slightly more effort than it should. Nobody says the acoustics are poor. They say they prefer the kitchen.

Soft mass is the answer, and it has to be quantity rather than gesture — curtains with real fullness, a rug with an underlay, upholstery, books on open shelves, something absorbent overhead in a tall room. One cushion does nothing. Half the surfaces does everything.
